I haven't encountered a single volleyball coach that would advocate a
close-fisted approach.  You are correct in observing that an
open-handed swing and contact gives you far more control.  For
instance, with a fist approach, it's impossible to impart topspin on
on the ball.

BTW, that's certainly an interesting choice of dejanews username.
